How to Measure VPN Speed Fairly

Compare a VPN connection with a controlled baseline, separate throughput from latency, retain failed trials, and summarize repeated measurements without exposing private network data.

This is a reader-run comparison method, not a LionVPN benchmark, a fastest-route claim or a guarantee of speed improvement. No measured product results are asserted here.

Write down the comparison conditions

Choose one device, network and test destination. Keep the test tool, destination, transfer direction and measurement duration consistent. Record the time window, connection type, broad test region and client version. A result from one network does not establish performance for every operator or location.

  • Use a test you are authorized to run and avoid sensitive work traffic.
  • Pause other heavy transfers when you can do so without disrupting work.
  • Record automatic versus manually selected routes.
  • Keep upload and download measurements separate.

Measure a nearby baseline in time

Compare a disconnected baseline and the VPN condition in alternating rounds over the same time window. Repeat each condition several times and keep all attempts. This suggested comparison is not a full implementation of RFC 6349, which describes a more detailed TCP throughput framework.

Separate throughput, delay and loss

Report throughput in clearly stated units and delay in milliseconds. Small-packet latency is a different measure from sustained transfer throughput. TCP throughput also depends on path characteristics such as round-trip time, bottleneck capacity, loss and buffering; a low ping alone does not demonstrate high throughput.

  • Specify whether the rate is in megabits per second or megabytes per second.
  • Record latency before and during the transfer when the tool supports it.
  • Do not turn a failed or timed-out trial into a successful zero-speed measurement.

Summarize the whole sample

Report the number of attempted trials, successful trials and failures separately. For successful trials, include the median and range instead of selecting only the best run. Compare the same direction and destination. If the baseline changes substantially, repeat the comparison and explain the unstable conditions.

Share a useful, private result

A minimal report can contain the client version, operating system, general network type, test tool, public test region, date/time window and summary statistics. Remove account details, exact source IP addresses, private endpoints, Wi-Fi names and browsing records. Keep raw measurements locally; do not upload real customer or VPN browsing data to an AI service.
